What is LEED Certification?

The Environmental Benefits of Dykes Paving Recycled Aggregate Materials

Use of recycled construction materials is one of many ways that building owners and developers can reduce their environmental impact while maintaining quality construction.   Dykes Paving a pioneer in the development of recycled asphalt and aggregate materials for over 30 years has developed and extensively tested a variety of Recycled Aggregate Products that significantly lower environmental impact, save cost, and meet stringent industry standards. Today, all Dykes Paving aggregate materials are composed of 100% recycled material.

Use of recycled construction materials reduces demand for virgin materials, in return reducing the associated environmental impacts involved in the mining process.  The environmental benefits of using Dykes Paving Recycled Aggregate Materials include:

  • Diversion of waste destined for landfills
  • Conservation of natural habitat
  • Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in:
    • Reduced fuel consumption in transportation
    • Reduced energy consumption in mining machinery
  • Reduction of water consumption used in mining process
  • Reduction of cost to owner
  • Durability

All of Dykes Paving materials are developed from material extracted in and around Atlanta.  For owners and developers in the greater Atlanta area and throughout the state, use of Dykes Paving materials also reduces greenhouse gas emissions, dependence on foreign oil, and toxic volatile organic compound emissions typically associated with traditional aggregates and paving products.

Uses of Dykes Paving Recycled Aggregate Materials

Dykes Paving recycled aggregate materials come in all sizes: #810 screenings, crush and  run, #57 stone, riprap/surge stone.  Recycled aggregates can be used in a number of applications:

  • Structural fill
  • Infrastructure support
  • Road base
  • Soil stabilization
  • Drainage
  • Stormwater control

Dykes Paving and LEED®

The LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Rating System recognizes the positive environmental benefits of using recycled and regionally produced materials and gives credit to building owners who use these materials in their projects.  Points which may be earned by using recycled content and regionally produced materials are described below.

MATERIALS & RESOURCES CREDIT 4 – RECYCLED CONTENT Use of recycled content in building materials reduces the environmental impacts of virgin material extraction and processing.  Two points can be earned for use of recycled content materials under the LEED® Rating System.  One point for use of 10% recycled content materials by cost, two points for 20% use of recycled content materials by cost.  An additional point may be earned for exemplary performance if recycled content materials account for 30% or more of materials cost of project.   Dykes Paving a leader in the remanufacturing and use of recycled construction materials for over 20 years provides quality test products that reduce cost and environmental impact.  All Dykes Paving aggregate materials are made from 100% recycled content and count toward earning of MRc4 points.  To figure out just how Dykes Paving materials can contribute to these points for your project, see Cost Calculator below.

MATERIALS & RESOURCES CREDIT 5 -REGIONAL MATERIALS Regionally extracted and manufactured products reduce the environmental impact of transportation and support regional businesses.  For the purpose of this credit, regional materials are defined as those which are extracted/harvested, process and manufactured within 500 miles of the project site.  As with MRc4, two points are available for regional materials under the LEED® Rating System: one point for 10% regional materials and two points for 20% regional materials, calculated by cost.  A third point may also be earned for exemplary performance if regional materials account for 30% or more of total materials cost on job.  All of Dykes Paving aggregate materials are derived from materials harvested in the greater Atlanta area.  For more information on how Dykes Paving materials can contribute to MRc5 points for your project, see Cost Calculator below.
